People in Indonesia use meterais way more than they have to, partially because they don't understand what it is for, and also because it's Rp 6000, and the hassle of not having one when actually needed is far more than the monetary value. There are specific documents that require meterais, mostly anything that involves money transactions and/or may be used in court. It doesn't make anything more legal, it just means that taxes have been paid. How does it make anything more legitimate or legal? Shouldn't there be a notary if that's what you're looking for?Īnd what is the money used for? Who does it go to? I'm so confused.Meterai is simply a tax for documents. Maybe it's because I'm an American and we don't have anything like a stamp duty, but I really, really don't understand what the hell the materai is supposed to do. Okay, since we're on the topic: what the hell is the materai stamp for? I don't understand it.
